A Cracked Exhaust Manifold Is a Malfunctioning Exhaust Manifold

Although rare, the exhaust manifold can crack. This generally happens if the vehicle is being operated when the engine is running too hot. Unfortunately, when the manifold cracks, it causes malfunctions in the exhaust system and problems with the engine. J&S Auto Repair is going to list the problems associated with a cracked exhaust manifold below so you know what to look for in your automobile.

Check Engine Warning

Because the exhaust system is malfunctioning and the cracked manifold is causing engine problems, your vehicle’s main computer chip will turn on the check engine light. It turns on this light if it cannot repair the problem itself, and the chip cannot replace the cracked manifold.

Poor Performance

Another thing that is going to happen with a cracked exhaust manifold is a reduction in your engine’s performance. Unfortunately, when the exhaust manifold is cracked, it fills the engine with exhaust gases. These gases interfere with the engine’s combustion and cause poor performance.

Reduced Gas Mileage

In addition to the reduced performance, you will also see a reduction in your vehicle’s gas mileage. The engine uses more gasoline or diesel fuel when it is performing poorly. As such, you will head to the service station more often to keep the tank full until you replace the cracked manifold.

Hissing, Popping, Squealing

A cracked exhaust manifold can make strange noises when you first start your engine. Specifically, the manifold may hiss, pop, squeal, or tap. Sometimes, these noises stop after a while because the crack gets sealed temporarily. This happens when the exhaust manifold expands when it heats up.

Burning Engine Odors

Aside from strange noises, you may also notice strange smells when you drive your automobile. The reason why is that the exhaust is infiltrating the engine and overheating all of the parts. In addition to the burning odors, your engine may also overheat if there is enough exhaust flowing into it.

Noticeable Exhaust Odors

Finally, you may also smell the exhaust inside your vehicle. Sometimes, when the engine is filled with exhaust, the ventilation system pushes it through the vents. If this is the case with your automobile, we recommend that you pull over and call for a tow truck. Driving the automobile while you are inhaling the exhaust can make you seriously ill. It can even be fatal.
