Poor Maintenance Can Make Your Engine Overheat All the Time

If you don’t properly maintain your automobile, J&S Auto Repair advises that this will increase the chances of having the engine overheat all the time. The motor oil alone helps to keep the engine cooler by drawing heat away from moving parts. Failing to change your motor oil can make your engine run hotter. This is just one thing that can cause an overheating engine. Here are other problems.

Water Pump Failure

The water pump is responsible for circulating the coolant throughout the engine to keep the temperature under 220 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water pump goes bad, you may have zero coolant circulation and an overheating engine.

Thermostat Failure

The thermostat releases the coolant into the engine. If it fails, you may end up without any coolant being released for the water pump to circulate. Unfortunately, without coolant, your engine can overheat and as little as 10 to 15 minutes.

Leaking Cooling System

If your cooling system has a leak, this will reduce the coolant level in the engine and cause it to overheat. Coolant to leak out of both the water pump and thermostat. It can also leak out of the radiator, radiator hoses, seals, and gaskets.

Clogged Cooling System

The water pump may be doing its job that your coolant circulation may be impeded if there is a clog in the cooling system. If you don’t have the cooling system flushed every 30,000 miles, sediment can build up in the radiator hoses and prevent coolant circulation.

Malfunctioning Fan

The radiator has a fan that helps cool off the coolant once it has returned from circulating through the engine. If the radiator fan is not working, you will end up with hot coolant circulating through the engine and an overheating engine.

Radiator Problems

Finally, the radiator itself can be the reason why your engine is overheating all the time. If it is clogged or corroded, it may be hemorrhaging coolant out of the bottom. The air inlets in the radiator can also get clogged with grime and prevent the coolant’s temperature reduction.
