The Bite Point On My Clutch Seems Higher

Also called the catch point, if the bite point on your clutch seems higher, this is a sign that the clutch is going out. When this position changes, the internal mechanisms of the clutch are wearing down. Sometimes, we can solve the problem by adjusting the clutch. Depending on the internal damage, however, we may need to replace the clutch. Aside from this issue, J&S Auto Repair lists other indications that the clutch is going bad below.

Acceleration/Engine Lag

When the clutch is engaged, i.e., you’ve pressed it down, the engine shifts its power to the transmission. It is this power in the transmission that turns the drivetrain, i.e., your wheels. If the clutch is going out, it may slip out of engagement even though you haven’t released it yet. When this happens, you do not have a complete power adjustment between the engine and transmission. Consequently, your acceleration and engine will hesitate to pick up speed.

Burning Odors From the Clutch

What happens above is called a slipping clutch. Another sign that you are dealing with a slipping clutch is burning odors coming from the clutch. You may have burned the clutch when you first started driving a vehicle with a manual transmission. Now, however, there should be no distinctive hot odors coming from the clutch. If there are, the clutch needs to be inspected right away.

Grinding Gears When Shifting

Getting back to the power transfer between the engine and the transmission, another thing that happens when this transfer is not complete is your gears will grind as you try to shift them. Again, you probably ground the gears when you were learning to drive a manual transmission, but you don’t do this anymore. If they have suddenly started grinding, your clutch is not staying engaged.

Problems With the Gears

If the clutch needs to be replaced, you will have problems with your gears in terms of shifting them and putting your car, truck, or utility vehicle into gear. This can make driving your automobile nearly impossible, especially if you can’t shift gears.

Spongy or Hard Clutch Pedal

Finally, along with the bite point changing, you may notice a difference in how your clutch feels. It doesn’t matter if the clutch feels spongy or hard, either of these things indicate that your clutch is on its way out and it needs to be replaced.
