When Should I Get a Second Opinion on Auto Repairs

It’s hard to make a decision when you’ve just received devastating news. Most people think about second opinions when they hear bad news from their doctors or financial advisors, but what about their cars? You don’t have to take one mechanic’s word for it. There’s nothing that should stop you from getting a second opinion on vehicle repairs if you want one. In fact, there are times when J&S Auto Repair recommends it. Here’s what they are to help you decide what’s best for you.

Get a Second Opinion if the Repairs Are Crazy-Expensive

Let’s assume for the moment that a mechanic has delivered the “your timing belt broke” news. Or, perhaps you’ve blown the head gasket or cracked the engine block. These are extensive damages, and the repairs to fix them could hit up your bank account for well over $5,000 in some cases. A second opinion is a good idea here because it gives you a chance to confirm the expensive and devastating news and also, hopefully, find a qualified and experienced mechanic willing to do the work for less.

Once You’ve Got the Second Opinion, Consider This

If, indeed, the second opinion confirmed the first one and you’re facing extensive automotive repairs, it’s time to take a few things into consideration before you give the mechanic the okay. Many people move forward with the repair expenses (even if they have to borrow the money or charge the repairs on their credit cards) because their vehicles

  • Aren’t paid off yet and they owe too much money on the contract
  • Are paid off but still have a lot of life left in them (Why take on car payments again?)
  • They’re attached to their vehicles emotionally, i.e. it’s their first car or their dream car
  • Some of the repairs are covered under an extended warranty

This is a personal choice that is also quite logical. If you cannot afford to buy a new car and make monthly payments, you might be better off fixing your old car. You can talk with each mechanic about this, too. Perhaps they see other problems with the vehicle that will continue to saddle you with repair bills for years to come.

Another consideration is your budget. Ask yourself honestly what fits better in it. Will it harm your finances less to pay for the repairs, or should you cut your losses and buy a new car? There’s no perfect answer but J&S Auto Repair in Warwick, RI, can help. We offer free second opinions, so make an appointment today!
